Residency Procedures

The following are the steps to be taken to secure a temporary six-month residency as a visitor in Jordan.

  1. Register with the local police station within a month of entering the country.  This entails going to Amn al-Rashid police station with a certified contract from your landlord and your passport which will be stamped with a three-month residency from the date of entry.
  2. To extend the three month residency go to the Border Control Office in Tila' al-Aly and your passport will be stamped for another three months.

Things to know.

  1. Most non-western passport holders are required to have a blood test within the first month of entering the country, before going to Amn al Rashid police station.
  2. A visa is not a residency.  It is permission to enter the country.  If you have a six month visa, it just means that the visa should be used within that time period.  If it is a multiple entry visa, then you can leave and enter Jordan as many times as you like within the allowed period without paying for a new entry visa each time.
  3. There is a fine of about 1.5 JOD per day for every day you go over your residency period.  If you are late in registering within the first month of entering the country, you must then go to the Border Control Office to pay a fine before going to have your passport stamped at Amn al Rashid police station.  This must be done the same day or you will be considered late and will have to pay another fine.  If you are planning on leaving the country shortly after your month, three month, or six month stay, you can just pay the late fees at the airport when you leave.
If you plan on staying for more than the six months allowed, you have to leave the country and upon returning repeat the above process.
